Smallpox [smôlˌpäks]
1.	An acute contagious disease transmitted through close contact.
Usually leaving permanent scars.

2.	Spawned from the misspent youths of a puppeteer and a
storyteller, Smallpox Theatre is the collaboration of Splatt & Lark, two multi-
disciplinary, Melbourne based theatre makers.
The sweet nostalgic styling of this troupe drips like molasses off the tail of a
dead cat. The dark, twisted surrealism that engulfs the Smallpox world marries
puppetry, mime, clowning and sideshow to create a mode of visual storytelling
that is intimate, poetic and grotesquely playful.

RITES OF PASSAGE AND HOPSCOTCH FILMS invite you to a charming oddball road movie opening in cinemas April 5th called ‘This Must Be The Place’

Sean Penn delivers an incredible performance as Cheyenne, a beautifully peculiar aging Goth musician living in Dublin with his down to earth wife (Frances McDormand) in the wonderfully original film THIS MUST BE THE PLACE. When his father passes away, Cheyenne returns to America for the first time in 30 years to embark on a road trip that will change him forever. Featuring a fantastic soundtrack by David Byrne, THIS MUST BE THE PLACE is rich in humour, humanity and eye-liner!

Make-A-Wish Australia grants the wishes of children and young people with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Make-A-Wish was established in 1985 and has since granted almost 7,000 wishes to children in Australia.

Tattoos for Wishes is the fundraising initiative of tattoo enthusiast, Sarah Mooney. Sarah is a keen supporter of Make-A-Wish® Australia and is proud to have chosen it as sole beneficiary charity.

Combining her two passions – tattoos and granting the wishes of seriously-ill children, Sarah has developed a fundraiser with a difference.

In a bid to raise much needed funds for Make-A-Wish®, Sarah is inviting attendees at the Rites of Passage Convention to show their support for the work of Make-A-Wish in ink. That’s right, six notable tattoo artists have come on board, each agreeing to tattoo any of 14 specially developed ‘wish’ designs for a discount price throughout the duration of the convention, with all the funds raised donated to Make-A-Wish.

We urge those in attendance to support Tattoos for Wishes.

If a tattoo isn’t for you, you can still show your support by purchasing Tattoos for Wishes T-shirts and prints throughout the event.

I am sitting by my fire here listening to increasingly torrential rain that has been relentless for a couple of days now. All the local roads are flooded and I am isolated on top of a hill in my tee pee which I have lived in for the last 2 years whilst I complete a building project.

Fortunately I have a good supply of wood to keep my fire going and enough food if it goes on for a few days. It’s actually really good fun and a great opportunity to just be at home and catch up on things that can otherwise be put aside. Like writing this blog………….

So what is a Rite of Passage? If I am going to blog about a ROP then we need to understand what we are talking about. Interestingly there is great confusion and even disagreement about what a ROP is.

Stop and think for a moment. What does a ROP mean for you?

I have spoken to many people and it means very different things to different people, including:

the first time they got drunk

turning 18

leaving home

losing their virginity

getting married

getting their first job

joining the army

getting their first tattoo

For me I would have said that when I was 18 and I went overseas on my own for a year, in the age before emails and skype, that was a real ROP. For the first time I had to look after myself, I made all the decisions about how I would spend my time and who I would spend it with. I had to manage my own money and could eat or drink whatever I wanted, as long as I felt that I could afford it.

However the definition that I would like to use is that a ROP is any event that creates a milestone in your life. That is any event which occurs after which you are not the same, after which you will be different forever. It can be good or bad.

Using this definition brings in many other events as being able to be defined as a ROP including:

Getting fired from your job

A big car accident

Divorce

A serious illness

Going bankrupt

Formal and official community ROP still occur regularly in our society today. A childs birthday party is a ROP. There are balloons, party hats and other things that don’t occur on any other day. The child gets a cake with their new number on it and candles to match. Then everybody sings happy birthday.

When a couple gets married that is a ROP. The bride wears a special wedding dress, the local priest, rabbi or marriage celebrant conducts a ceremony, friends and relatives come along to witness and join in the celebration, then after it’s all over the newly joined couple go off on their own for a honey moon where they get time alone to start their married lives together.

For me when I graduated as a doctor it was a ROP. There was a big gathering at the university and all my family were there. All the new doctors had to wear black cloaks and square hats with pointed corners, I was given a certificate in front of everyone and then I was officially a doctor and it was even put into my name with two new letters.

Getting a tattoo is definitely be a ROP. It is a significant event or milestone which can have enormous meaning. Many people relate their tattoo to a particular time or event in their life and give a lot of thought to what they want to adorn their bodies with. Unfortunately some people get drunk and their tattoo is a random event that occurs on a night out with friends. Either way it is a permanent reminder.

Indigenous tribes used ROP formally to create and acknowledge changes in a persons life. They used ceremony and ritual at key times that often involved many or even all the people in the community.. They had a ROP for births, for marriages, for deaths and for time when a boy changed and became a young man or a girl changed and became a young woman.

ROP were a hugely important part of their culture and occurred in every indigenous society. The ROP was not just for the person going through the change, it was also so that every other person associated with him or her would know that the change had occurred.

Many of these tribes used tattoos as a major part of the ceremony for the initiate. Sometimes the tattoos would evolve and as the man or woman got older and be added to in progressive ceremonies over their lifetimes. They were a clear sign to all other members of the tribe, and other tribes, as to the social standing of that person.

A ROP can be an event that changes us for the better or it can be one that is damaging. The aim of our organisation, The Australian Rites of Passage Institute, is to create ROP that are positive events in the lives of young people all over Australia and around the world. We do this by understanding what a ROP is, what the elements necessary to create one are and how to do it in such a way that the young person involved benefits. Soon we will be training more people to do the same thing in other parts of the country and overseas. For more information please check our website.
